About the show
On a dark and stormy night…
1946: An unknown man returns to his childhood home.
1927: Four children play a delightfully dark, frightfully funny game…
Edward Constance Oliver and Theo revel in a fantasy of gothic proportions. In their ever-shifting world of joyful cruelty the only sure things are the rules of the game. But the violence of a half-forgotten war lurks beyond the torchlight, and the surrounding shadows threaten to unleash the darkness within…
Born of classic Gothic novels and visually inspired by early silent film, Parlour Games blends acrobatics, shadow play and an inventive visual style. This is a funny, playful and disturbing work of physical theatre from Lecoq-trained Tooth+Nail.
Tooth+Nail was founded in 2014 at the Ecole Jacques Lecoq in Paris. An international company, we tell original, devised stories that combine humour and darkness in a visually rich and highly physical style. Story and character are at the heart of our work. The question that drives us is: what can we do in a theatre that we can't do anywhere else?
We formed Tooth+Nail on graduating from Lecoq, having worked together since the very first day at the school. Parlour Games was our first show as a company, and debuted at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2015. Following some alterations, it went on to Prague Fringe 2016, where it won the Inspiration Award for Best New Show. Our second show, Hummingbird, a deviously touching tale of love and murder, is now also on tour after a hugely successful Edinburgh run. You can keep up with all the goings on at www.toothandnailtheatre.com.
